Local Walks, Gardens & Beaches

Take A Closer Look

So much to do and to choose from.

Local walks

The South West Coast Path is Britain's longest national trail. The western edge of the Lizard Peninsula, which the South West Coast Path follows has a special status, designated both as a National Park and a Heritage Coastline. Mullion sits at the centre of this stretch of coast.

When staying with us, we offer walking packs, which have lots of information and different walking routes around the south west of Cornwall. Please pop into the office to collect one.

Beaches

The Lizard Peninsula boasts an extraordinary variety of beaches, coves and harbours, rich in history, natural beauty and wildlife.

And being on a Peninsula you are simply spoilt for choice. Busy beaches with good facilities abound, but you don’t have to go far to find solitude and quiet. A stroll around the Helford River provides opportunities for quiet discovery, but wherever you are the constant ebb and flow of the tide means that no two days are ever quite the same.

Sand, sun, surf, cliffs, crabs and caves - Cornwall's coast provides a variety of beach environments from secluded coves to wide open expanses of golden sand. With more than 200 miles of coastline, Cornwall has no shortage of beaches. Wherever you are in Cornwall, there's a beach not very far away.

Gardens

Cornwall has over 70 gardens to visit. On the Lizard are the local gardens of the Bonython estate. A little further afield are the majestic gardens on the Helford estuary Trebah and Glendurgan showing a sub tropical paradise. North of Helston is Glendurgan and further afield are the famous Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan.

Listed below are a couple of our favourite gardens;

Trebah
Trebah at Mawnan Smith near Falmouth is a spectacular 26 acre Cornish garden. This sub-tropical paradise is home to a unique collection of rare and exotic plants, trees and shrubs winding down to a private and secluded beach on the Helford River. Trebah is a garden for all seasons, with year round colour and scent. It has something for everyone with children's activities, special events, The Gallery Shop, Planters Cafe and Garden Shop. Open all year and well worth a visit.

Bonython
Surrounded by the farm and woodlands of the Bonython Estate, the gardens comprise a sweeping driveway with hydrangeas and specimen trees; formal planting around the Georgian Manor (not open), walled garden including pool area with summerhouse, Herbaceous, Herb Garden and Potager; three lakes in a wooded valley sequence.

Wetsuits & Beach Safety

Make the most of your time on the beach - surf away all day!
The sea water may be cold at times for the occasional swimmer. An ideal solution for keeping warmer and making the most of your beach visits is to buy or hire a beach wet suit; either full size or three quarter length. Wet suits are available at Atlantic Forge, a beach wear and souvenir shop in Mullion village.

Please, please, please look into beach safety. When gone wrong the sea can be an unforgiving thing. Always look out for lifeguards and the flags. Not all the beaches have lifeguards and some are only there seasonally or in restricted times, during the day.

You’ll need to know your flags:

Red and yellow beach flag
Lifeguarded area. Safest area to swim, bodyboard and use inflatables.

Black and white chequered beach flag
For surfboards, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and other non-powered craft. Launch and recovery area for kite surfers and windsurfers. Never swim or bodyboard here.

Red beach flag
Danger! Never go in the water under any circumstances when the red flag is flying.

Orange windsock
Indicates offshore or strong wind conditions. Never use inflatables when the windsock is flying.

For more information on beach safety please visit the RNLI website.
